Find out why Stony Brook University has become an internationally recognized research institution that is changing the world. We also provide a range of analytical services to the public. We especially welcome collaborative ideas and encourage developing joint proposals to seek external funding to make the center more sustainable. The center is open to all faculty members, researchers, and students at Brooklyn College and other City University of New York campuses for their research and teaching activities. ![]() The XRD is currently primarily used for the identification and quantification of mineral phases (e.g., asbestos), metal oxides in natural or synthetic materials, and rocking curve measurements. The multipurpose TEM can be used for high-resolution image observation, versatile analysis by convergent-beam electron diffraction, and analysis of the atomic structure and/or binding sites of atoms. The instrument provides parts per billion (ppb) to parts per trillion (ppt) detection limits for most elements. Genovesi Environmental Study Center NYC Center for Aerospace and Applied Mathematics. In addition to being home to over 200 living organisms, ESC is equipped with four learning labs, where your group can investigate flora, fauna, biotechnology, and STEM-related topics. The low-blank trace metal lab processes all types of samples into aqueous solution that ICP-MS can analyze. Genovesi Environmental Study Center With its 7,000 square foot learning center, ESC is a unique space for groups to get a hands-on environmental science experience. The ICP-MS can rapidly analyze most elements in the periodic table in many different environmental, geological and biological matrices. The facilities at ESAC can provide structural and compositional information for a wide range of samples, especially at very high resolutions (nanometer scale) or ultra-low elemental concentrations (parts per trillion ranges). An environmental geochemistry laboratory is available for both research and teaching activities. Core facilities include a Perkin-Elmer Dynamic Reaction Cell Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS), an Analytical JEOL 200-kV Transmitted Electron Microscope (TEM), and a Philips Multi-Purpose X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD). The Genovesi Environmental Study Center (GESC) offers rich and engaging experiential environmental science programs for students and teachers at all grade levels. Conducts research that uses participation to better understand the environment by incorporating concepts such as freedom of choice and how its absence can affect privacy, territoriality, and crowding At the Center, students get hands-on environmental science and STEM instruction.Emphasizes challenging and changing conditions to support social, spatial, and environmental justice.Values and enables public understanding of and engagement with environmental, virtual, social, and urban issues.Advocates for the integration of many perspectives in interdisciplinary social scientific study to speak within and across disciplines.Takes a multidimensional, holistic stance on the environment that includes built, natural, and social settings. ![]() Provides a dynamic view of human-environment relations that considers how we shape and are shaped by our surrounding environment, from the intimate to the global.Interdisciplinary Study of the Human Environment: NYCEDC and Solar One Break Ground on Environmental Education Center. Are you motivated by doing research with (and not on) neighborhoods on issues like stop and frisk? Have you ever wondered about how Citi Bikes change the experience of urban living or why they are located only in lower/mid Manhattan and nearby gentrifying parts of Brooklyn? The Graduate Center’s Environmental Psychology community embraces the “messy, fleshy” world of everyday life by taking our research out of the lab and into real-world settings.
